ABOUT

Through language, text, and maps, the story of identity is told.

This website is a digital supplement to the theoretical work on the Master’s research Mapping Identity: Ways of Designing National Narratives. It provides examples of identity mapping in language, text, storytelling, and mapmaking; serving as an interactive and expandable archive

Mapping Identity is a research on the multifaceted concept of mapping and its role in the expression of Ukrainian identity in design. It explores mapping as a design tool that can highlight society’s identity, its issues, and needs. By undertaking this investigation, the thesis aims to contribute to the discourse on cultural identity and design, offering insights and perspectives that can inform future practices.

The research is divided into four chapters, each exploring different aspects of Ukrainian identity and ways of mapping it visually. The theoretical work is accompanied by the website. Serving as the digital archive, the website showcases examples of mapping and practices that could not be included in the text. The open-ended format of the website allows for unlimited future contributions to showcase that the identity of a nation is a fluid concept, and its design interpretation changes and develops with time.
